Site Health and Safety Plan Page 13
soon as possible. If the affected worker is allergic, or develops symptoms of allergic reaction,
seek medical treatment immediately.
3.4.7 Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes may transmit disease to humans (e.g., West Nile virus). Site personnel shall take
any necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long
pants, typical of Level "D" and greater PPE ensembles. Moreover, it may be recommended to
use an Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved insect repellent in accordance with
manufacturer's recommendations to mitigate to mitigate the potential of bites and exposure
to microbial pathogens.
3.5 Physical Hazards
3.5.1 Slips Trips and Falls
Slips trips and falls collectively account for nearly 50% of occupational injuries. Slips may
occur on uneven terrain, wet or slick surfaces resulting from leaks or spills. Tripping hazards
may be present from debris, poor housekeeping, uneven terrain, tools and/or equipment.
Falls may occur from ladder and scaffolding use. Slips, trips, and falls are preventable
injuries that require all personnel to be alert for such hazards, follow good housekeeping
practices, and use of appropriate equipment, and personal protective equipment.
3.5.2 Noise
Noise on construction sites originate from a wide variety of equipment, machinery, powered
tools in a variety of other sources. Sustained noise greater than 85 dBA shall result in the
implementation of a written hearing conservation program for Site workers. Hearing
protection with an appropriate Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) shall be worn in areas with
high noise levels. Like other PPE use on the Site, personnel shall be trained in the proper use,
including donning and doffing, and maintenance of hearing protection. Hearing protection is
recommended for essential site workers engaged in tasks within approximately 10 m of
operating equipment or powered hand tools.
3.5.3 Heavy Equipment and Pinch Points
Heavy machinery, including earthmoving equipment, shall be operated in compliance with
manufacturer's instructions, specifications, and limitations as well as any applicable local,
state or federal regulations. The operator shall be responsible for inspecting the equipment
prior to each use to verify that it is functioning properly and safely. Operating trucks and
equipment at the site will be supervised by a designated spotter.
The following precautions shall be observed whenever heavy equipment is in use:
• PPE, including safety glasses, high visibility vests, and hard hats must be worn.
• Personnel must be aware of the location and operation of heavy equipment and take
precautions to avoid getting in the way of its operation.
• Pedestrians must never assume that the equipment operator sees them; eye contact
and hand signals shall be used to inform the operator of the worker's intent.
• Personnel must not walk directly in back of, or to the side of, heavy equipment
without the operator's knowledge. Workers shall avoid entering the swing radius of
equipment and be aware of potential pinch points.
