Owner/Operators of Public Pools <br />SUBJECT: ADVISORY NOTICE - GROUND FAULT CIRCUIT INTERRUPTER (G.F.C.I,), <br />INSTALLATION REQUIRED BY MAY 1, 1999. <br />Background <br />Compliance <br />deadline and <br />how to <br />comply <br />MD Environmental Management Department's previous latter dated March 6, <br />1998, advised you of the new G.F.C.I. law for all public swimming/spa/wading <br />pools and the requirarnent to submit proof of compliance by May 1, 1099. As <br />of this date, many pool facilities have not provided the required written <br />G.F.C.I, verification to this Department. <br />All public swimming/spa/wading pools must comply with the following <br />California Health and Safety Code (C.H.S C.) 116049.1 by fvla_v tt.:1999: <br />"All underwater lighting systems operating at more that 15 volts, supplied <br />from a branch circuit, either directly or by way of a transformer, must be <br />Installed according to specified requirement* so that there is no shock <br />hazard with any likely combination of fault conditions during normal use." <br />" The specified requirements are: <br />"An approved ground fault interrupter shall be installed In the <br />branch circuit that applies to all fixtures operating at more than 15 <br />volts <br />Only approved underwater lighting fixtures shall be used and no <br />lighting fixtures shall be installed for operations at more than 150 <br />volts between conductors. <br />All owners or operators must <br />1. Obtain an inspection of Its public pool(s) by a qualified contractor who <br />has one of the following licenses. A-1, B-1, C-10, C-53 and C.61/1335. <br />2, Cur* in writing to this Department that. their public swimming pool <br />facility is in compliance with C,H.S,C, section 116049.1. <br />Note: Have a qualified contractor confirm that your Underwater lighting at <br />pool(s), spa(s) or wading pool(s) complies with section 116049,1. <br />Make sure the pool address and contractor's license number and name are <br />stated on the written confirmation, Enclosed is a form you may use for proof <br />of compliance. <br />Noncompliance with the G.F.C.I. requirement can be a critical violation and a <br />reinspection may be conducted.
