Field Sample Management Standard Operating Procedure <br /> SWE-FSOP-002;Revision 1 Ahtna Southwest Environmental Operations <br /> 1.4 Definitions <br /> Air or Ground Waybill. A shipping document that identifies the sender and addressee, transport carrier, <br /> size, and priority of a shipment transported by aircraft. <br /> Chain of Custody. In legal contexts, is the chronological documentation or paper trail that records the <br /> sequence of custody, control, transfer, analysis, and disposition of materials, including physical or <br /> electronic evidence. <br /> Dangerous Goods. Under the International Air Transport Association (IATA) definition, dangerous goods <br /> are articles or substances that can pose a hazard to health, safety, property, or the environment and are <br /> shown in the list of dangerous goods in the IATA regulations (IATA 1.0). <br /> Environmental sample. According to the Department of Transportation (DOT) 49 Code of Federal <br /> Regulations(CFR)Section 172.101 Appendix A, any sample that has less than reportable quantities of any <br /> hazardous constituents. <br /> Excepted Quantity(DOT&IATA Definition).A hazardous substance whose class is permitted on passenger <br /> aircraft but in such a small defined amount poses a low risk during transport by aircraft. Hazardous <br /> substances that meet the definition of Excepted Quantity may be exempted from documentation, <br /> packaging, marking, and labeling requirements typically required when presenting hazardous materials <br /> for passenger air transportation. Items shipped as excepted quantities are limited to volumes as specified <br /> in IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations,Table 2.6.A and DOT 49 CFR 173.4a. <br /> Hazardous materials. DOT defines a hazardous material as any item or chemical which, when being <br /> transported or moved in commerce, is a risk to public safety or the environment and is regulated as such <br /> under its Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration regulations (49 CFR 100-199), which <br /> includes the Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR 171-180). <br /> Sample label. An adhesive paper placed on sample containers or a tag tied to a sample container to <br /> designate a sample identification number and other identifying information. <br /> 2.0 Relevant Documents <br /> This SOP is intended to be used in conjunction with the following SOPs, and as such, the equipment and <br /> materials needed for those activities are not included in this SOP: <br /> Standard Operating Procedures <br /> • SWE-FSOP-001, Field Documentation <br /> • SWE-FSOP-400 Series,various sampling SOPS <br /> Field Forms <br /> • SWE-FFRM-004, Daily PFAS Sampling Checklist <br /> • SWE-FFRM-002, Chain of Custody <br /> Page 5 of 12 <br />
