Mud Rotary Drilling Field Standard Operating Procedure <br /> SWE-FSOP-304;Revision 0 Ahtna Southwest Environmental Operations <br /> • As per the site health and safety plan, appropriate barriers and markers should be in place before <br /> drilling. <br /> • Plastic sheeting (e.g., VisqueenT"^) may be required beneath the rig. <br /> • Appropriate cuttings and other IDW containment should be set onsite before drilling. <br /> 4.2.2 Discussion of Site Conditions <br /> Before drilling operations begin, the following must be completed: <br /> • The FTL or Field Geologist should assess the drilling site with the driller. This assessment should <br /> identify potential hazards and determine how drilling operations may impact the environment. <br /> • Potential hazards should be evaluated and corrected,or the borehole location changed or shifted. <br /> • The FTL or PL should inform the driller of the appropriate equipment (e.g., cookie-cutter, etc.)to <br /> penetrate the surface cover (e.g., asphalt, concrete, cement, etc.). <br /> • If a shallow subsurface hazard (i.e., unidentifiable utility or trapped vapors) may exist, the driller <br /> should be informed of the potential hazard before breaking ground. Drilling should then <br /> commence slowly to allow continuous visual inspection and monitoring, if necessary, stop for <br /> probing. <br /> 4.2.3 Mobilization <br /> Once the site is prepared, the rig is mobilized and located over the borehole. <br /> • The drill rig is mobilized to the site and located over the borehole. <br /> • The drill rig is leveled with a set of hydraulic pads attached to the front and rear of the drill rig. <br /> • The driller should always raise the mast slowly and carefully to prevent tipping or to damage the <br /> rig and avoid obstructions or hazards. <br /> • As per the site health and safety plan, appropriate barriers and markers should be placed before <br /> drilling. <br /> 4.3 Drilling Procedures <br /> Hand auger, shovel, or air knife the borehole location to the maximum expected depth of any utilities <br /> (commonly S feet or greater) before drilling. The driller should be informed of any known shallow <br /> subsurface hazards (unidentifiable utility, trapped vapors, etc.). Drilling the surface hole should <br /> commence slowly to allow continuous visual inspection and, if necessary, any interruptions for probing <br /> until the anticipated maximum depth of any suspected obstructions is exceeded. <br /> Before beginning drilling, the drilling fluid or mud should be "made up" in the mud pits. The drilling mud <br /> properties (as specified in the project work plans) should then be verified to the satisfaction of the Field <br /> Geologist before allowing drilling to proceed.These observations should also be documented by the site <br /> Field Geologist on the Field Activity Daily Log. <br /> 4.3.1 Borehole Drilling <br /> During drilling operations, and as the borehole is advanced, the Field Geologist will generally: <br /> • Observe and monitor rig operations <br /> • Conduct health and safety monitoring and sampling, as applicable, and supervise health and <br /> safety compliance <br /> Page 8 of 11 <br />
