Inservice Training: Proper Documentation Procedures for Stericycle Pickup Manifests
Department: Environmental Services / Nursing / Designated Pickup Staff
Trainer: Richard Verstl

Purpose of this Inservice
To ensure all staff responsible for signing medical waste pickup manifests from Stericycle are trained in
proper documentation procedures, preventing regulatory violations and ensuring legal compliance with
California Health and Safety Code Section 117975.

Why This Matters
Medical waste manifests are legal documents that must be complete, accurate, and available for
inspection. Incorrect or missing signatures, dates, or generator information can result in:
• Fines or citations during inspections
• Delays in licensing and renewals
• Inability to track or prove proper waste disposal

When Do You Sign a Manifest?
You are required to sign a manifest each time Stericycle picks up medical or pharmaceutical waste from
our facility.

Proper Procedure: Step-by-Step
I. Before Signing
A. Verify that the generator information (our facility’s name and address) is correct.
B. Confirm the date of pickup listed matches the current date.
C. Review the waste type(s) listed (e.g., pharmaceutical, sharps, red bag waste) and ensure they match
what is being picked up.
D. Check that container counts match what’s being picked up. If you are unsure, pause and verify.
II. Signing the Manifest
A. Use legible handwriting – no initials or scribbles.
B. Write your full name and job title clearly.
C. Record the accurate date and time of the pickup.
