The Angle of the End Cap Wedge can also be set = to the "angle" input if desired
The width of the wedge at grade will also be limited based on testing to 32" or 1/2 of the tank spacing
for multiple tanks side by side whichever is less.
Max width of the soil wedge at grade ww 32in
Deadman and Anchor Pad Soil Wedge
Wedge Width Factor Fww 1.5
The soil wedge for the deadmen and anchor pad is based on the
method published by Prof Emeritus Reynold K. Watkins of Utah
State University where the width of the soil wedge is some
multiplier of the footing lip. According to Prof Watkins, the width of
the soil wedge can be up to 3 times the lip of the footing. In this
sheet, this multiplier is the variable Fww and is set at Fww 1.5
providing conservative results.
The angle should be set at 45 deg + s
2 from the horizontal where
s is the angle of internal friction for the backfill. For silty sand per
"Soil Mechanics", Lambe and Whitman, Table 11.3, page 149 s=
30 degrees. That translates to an angle from horizontal of 60
degrees and 30 degrees from vertical.
In these calculations, instead of extending the wedge vertically
using this soil angle, we will use a wedge from the edge of the
deadman to grade which will be more conservative.
dmww min 32in Fww Wdm27 in
if dmww Wdmww"error""OK""OK"
Weight of Fill Wedge Acting on the Tank from Side
The submerged weight of the backfill wedge acting on the sides of the tank will be considered for
the tank cylinder length only.
Angle of Tank Side Wedge Aside_tk 15 deg max width at grade ww 32 in
InstallationNote "Tanks Side by Side spaced at 36 inches"
The depth of the soil wedge will be to grade and the wedge will be considered to be all fill even though there
may be concrete at the top that extends beyond the tank plan view. This will be conservative.
Effective Width of Tank Side Wedge at Grade
Tank Buoyancy, Rotten Robbie No 69,
Manteca CA, dwg 17366-001, 10ft DWT
Date Printed: 9/7/2023 Page 16 of 46
