Geosyntec
consultants
interval and the lithology encountered during the original well installation. The well screen interval
may be slightly adjusted in the field based on lithology encountered.
2.4 Other Well Maintenance Activities
Other well maintenance activities planned for 2025 include attempting to locate missing wells and
installing a QR code inside the W-341 well box.
In 2023 and 2024, Geosyntec attempted to locate a number of wells denoted as unable to locate or
unable to access (Geosyntec 2024). Following the efforts in 2023 and 2024, a total of 29 wells are
still denoted as missing within RRI (Table 2 and Figure 4). Geosyntec plans to further assess well
locations observed to (1)have previously been reported as destroyed, or(2)be inaccessible due to
equipment parked over well.
Monitoring well locations P-113A,W-238, and W-239,located within an accessible paved portion
of the landfill area, were previously marked as destroyed in the Groundwater Monitoring Annual
Report for 2015 for the West Complex at RRI(Environmental Risk Services 2016),though the date
or record of destruction cannot be found. To ground-truth that the wells are destroyed, the well
locations will be assessed using a handheld GPS operating device with a horizontal accuracy of
one-inch to record field observations of conditions at the surveyed coordinates. Additionally,
monitoring wells W-267 and 120-MW 1 were previously denoted as unable to locate due to
equipment being parked over the well location.Geosyntec plans to use the handheld GPS operating
device to locate the surveyed location of the wells and will coordinate with tenants to remove
equipment (if feasible) as needed.
Geosyntec installed QR codes on wells that were sampled as part of the 2024 groundwater
monitoring scope (Geosyntec 2024). The QR code will be scanned by field sampling technicians
before sampling, and the QR code will direct the field technician to a mobile field application
detailing well identification and well construction information to reduce well misidentification
errors. As part of the 2025 well maintenance activities, a QR code will be installed at W-341 since
it was not accessible during the 2024 deployment.
Additionally, Geosyntec will perform well repairs and well protection measures on an as-needed
basis as determined by field observations. Well repair activities may include replacing missing
vault box bolts;re-tapping the threads on well boxes;replacing missing or damaged well caps; and
replacing well vault boxes that are damaged. Well repair activities will be implemented for
monitoring wells associated with an OU. Well repair activities that require ground disturbance(i.e.
replacing well vault boxes)will not be performed in the Landfill Area due to on-going construction
as described under Section 2.
RRI 2025 Groundwater Monitoring Work Plan 12 May 2025
