STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
MONTORING WELL DEVELOPMENT
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Overview
This standard operating procedure (SOP) describes the protocol to be followed during the
development or redevelopment of monitoring wells. The field form for monitoring well
development is included with this SOP.
1.2 Objective
The objectives of monitoring well development are to remove sediment that may have
accumulated during well installation, to consolidate the filter pack around the well screen, and to
enhance the hydraulic connection between the target zone and the well. The objective of
monitoring well redevelopment is to remove build-up of sediments within a monitoring well to
ensure hydraulic communication between the geologic formation and the entire well screen, and
to improve the yield of the well.
1.3 Equipment
The following equipment will be used during well development:
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and air monitoring equipment per the HASP;
• submersible pump or equivalent pump;
• bailer;
• surge block;
• container for purge water (e.g. drums);
• container with known volume (e.g., five-gallon bucket) for flow estimation;
• water level indicator;
• stopwatch or timer;
• turbidity meter;
• well development record form (included in SOP);
• field log book; and
• pens.
