Revised: 02/03/2023 2
Job Steps Hazards Actions to Eliminate or Minimize Hazards RAC
2. Locate and Open Tank Lid - Inhalation of Hazardous
Vapors/Gases
- Fire/Explosion
1. Open lid carefully and use a PID (or similar) monitoring
instrument to obtain a field reading. Reference field reading(s)
with site action levels in HASP and determine if it is safe to
continue. If LEL concentrations are at or above 10%, Stop work
and seek further guidance from the ICS Safety Officer.
2. Always keep a 20lbs. ABC Fire Extinguisher readily available
during UST removal activities. Do not perform tasks with power
tools unless they are intrinsically safe. Only use non-sparking
hand tools made of brass or pneumatic tools. Note: Smoking or
open flames are not allowed as vapors can easily ignite.
M
3. Pump or Vacuum Residual
Liquid Product from UST
- Fire/Explosion
- Improper Pumping
- Leaks / Spills
- Liquid Splash
- Fall from Elevated Heights
1. Pump residual liquids into approved totes or containers using
a pneumatic diaphragm pump.
2. If a third-party vacuum truck service is to be used to vacuum
out tank(s), ICS shall refer to the subcontractor's AHA for the
task and ensure that all vacuum hoses are properly bonded prior
to vacuuming.
3. Check all hose connections and make sure connections are
tight. Keep a spill kit readily available to clean up any small
drips or spills.
4. For pneumatic pumping, do not leave operating pump
unattended, place hose end securely into tote or tank you are
pumping to before activating the pump. Wear a face shield,
goggles and coated tyvek over clothing.
5. Always use (3) points of contact when ascending/descending a
ladder (one foot + two hands or two feet + one hand), secure a
safety chain at the top of the ladder before beginning any work
and do not remove until work is complete, do not carry hoses or
tools up the ladder, use a rope to bring them to the top of tank,
use rope to lower hose and tools to ground level.
H
NC-25-1137 Tiwana & Sons
1210 East Hammer Lane, Stockton, CA 95210
