<br />30 <br /> <br />Provide Shade <br /> <br />• Take lunch and breaks in shaded areas. <br />• Create shade or shelter using umbrellas, tents, and canopies. <br />• Fabrics such as canvas, sailcloth, awning material and synthetic shade cloth create good <br />UV radiation protection. <br />• Check the UV protection of the materials before buying them. Seek protection levels of <br />95 percent or greater and check the protection levels for different colors. <br /> <br />Clothing <br /> <br />• Reduce UV radiation damage by wearing proper clothing, for example, long sleeved shirts <br />with collars, and long pants. The fabric should be closely woven and should not let light <br />through. <br />• Head protection should be worn to protect the face, ears, and neck. Wide-brimmed hats <br />equipped with a neck shade offer added protection. <br />• Wear UV-protective sunglasses or safety glasses. These should fit closely to the face. <br />Wrap-around style glasses provide the best protection. <br /> <br />Sunscreen <br /> <br />• Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed skin surfaces at least 20 minutes before <br />exposure, allowing time for it to adhere to the skin. <br />• Reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours and more frequently when sweating or <br />performing activities where it may be wiped off. <br />• Choose a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF). Most dermatologists <br />advocate SPF 30 or higher for significant sun exposure. <br />• Waterproof sunscreens should be selected for use in or near water, and by those who <br />perspire sufficiently to wash off non-waterproof products. <br />• Check for expiration dates. Most sunscreens are only good for about three years. Store in <br />a cool place out of the sun. <br />• No sunscreen provides 100 percent protection against UV radiation.
