The sanitation
standards (Cal-OSHA T8 CCR §1526 and T8 CCR §1527) are intended to ensure that workers do
not suffer adverse health effects that can result if toilets are not sanitary and/or are not available
when needed.

Toilet / Washing Facilities

The toilet and washing facilities provided are to comply with the following requirements:

• Be maintained in a clean, sanitary condition and cleaned regularly.
• Toilet facilities should be maintained in good working order, and privacy will be assured with
an adequate supply of toilet paper.
• Portable Toilet is vented and equipped, as necessary, with lighting.
• Ensure an adequate supply of water and soap for effective washing and readily available
single-use towels or a warm-air blower.
• Provide a sign or equivalent method of notice indicating that the water is intended for
washing only; it is located outside the toilet facility and not attached to it.
• Where fewer than five employees and only one toilet facility are provided, the required
washing facility may be inside the toilet facility.
• Where no more than one person will occupy the toilet at a time, it can be locked from the
inside and contain at least one toilet, but a separate toilet for each sex need not be provided.
Where such single-occupancy rooms have more than one toilet facility, only one such facility
in each toilet room should be counted.
• Employees with mobile crews must provide readily available transportation that provides
prompt access (less than 10 minutes) to restrooms if they are unavailable at work.
• Portable trailer-mounted toilets must have a back stand deployed if left detached from the
vehicle.

Near the work site, hazardous substance washing facilities shall be provided for employees
engaged in applying paints or coatings or other operations involving substances that may be
harmful to them. These facilities should be equipped to enable employees to remove such
substances and have an adequate supply of water, soap, or special cleansing compound
sufficient to remove the hazardous substance from skin surfaces effectively.
