Foothill Landfill
Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan

Page 62

Because of the lack of industrial activities in the drainage areas that were experiencing high
iron concentrations, WGR suspected the natural soils to be the source of the iron. To that
affect, soil samples were collected and tested, and research was performed of the soil types
present at the facility. On April 28, 2017, soil samples were collected from non-industrial
discharge point areas ST-1, ST-6, and ST-7 and were analyzed for total iron. Three sets of
samples were collected (one set at each of the discharge points) that exceeded the iron NAL.
Each set of samples had soil grab samples collected at the following places (refer to SWPPP
Map 5 for the sample and drainage area locations):
• Downstream areas of the discharge point but in a location that was not in contact with
concentrated runoff or industrial activities (designated by “Drainage Area A”);
• Up-gradient areas of the discharge point but in a location that was not in contact with
concentrated runoff or industrial activities (designated by “Drainage Area B”); and
• Soil collected at the discharge points directly within the path of runoff (designated by
“Drainage Area C”).
Figure 23 – Sampling Locations Along Waverly Road
ST-1
2016/2017 Averages: TSS 7.7 mg/l Fe 1.16 mg/l
ST-6
2016/2017 Averages: TSS 9.5 mg/l Fe 1.76 mg/l
ST-7
2016/2017 Averages: TSS 7.1 mg/l Fe 1.33 mg/l
