Industrial Hygiene Program for Cintas Location 922
Baseline Survey
The work operations and processes at Cintas Location 922 have been reviewed and analyzed by
location management in consultation with corporate safety staff and the following potential health
hazards noted.
SIDS for hazardous chemicals used at the facility can be found in the electronic Chemical Safety
Management System. SIDS shall be readily available in the workplace for each substance along
with a written Hazard Communication program. In addition, hazards associated with specific job
functions are outlined in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA), along with the measures needed to
protect employees while performing the task.
The following sections of the Baseline Survey have been customized to location 922.
Processes utilizing chemicals or producing physical, or health hazards may include:
Boiler room — corrosives, noise
Boiler room chemicals are typically staged in 55-gal drums or enclosed delivery systems and then
transferred into the process using small chemical pumps and/or tubing. Appropriate PPE, such as
gloves and face shield, are utilized as needed.
Bulk chemical storage -corrosives
Corrosive chemicals used in the wash process are typically stored in drums and/or bulk tanks
inside spill containment structures. The chemicals are transferred to the washers via non-contact
methods such as pumps and transfer lines.
Wastewater treatment— health hazard (silica), corrosives, noise
Wastewater treatment operations may involve the use of bentonite clay which may contain a
small amount of silica. Granular clay is added by dumping a 2000 lb. super sack into the clay
hopper above the clay tank. The entire process takes less than 10 minutes.
Air sampling of the clay addition process has been conducted at Cintas locations and consistently
shown total respirable silica levels far below regulated levels in industrial hygiene surveys.
Wash alley— corrosives, oxidizers (bleach), noise
Wash chemicals are transferred to the washers via pumps and transfer lines and are not directly
handled by operators.
Maintenance shop—gasses under pressure, flammable gas, flammables, flammable
aerosols, irritants, acute toxicity(welding fumes)
Various substances are used in relatively small quantities for normal maintenance and repair
activities. Paints, lubricants, adhesives, and degreasers may be present in small quantities.
Compressed gasses and flammable gases may be stored. Welding is rare and must follow the
hot work permit process. Limited welding on stainless steel is allowed per restrictions outlined in
policy.
Forklift (PITs) —corrosives
Forklift use is typically very intermittent. The Charging station for the battery powered PIT is
provided with a corrosive spill kit, access to flushing stations, and PPE.
Truck drive through —acute toxicity (carbon monoxide)
2
