A=COM <br /> • Be able to determine and implement decontamination procedures; <br /> • Have the ability to develop a site safety and control plan; <br /> • Understand chemical, radiological, and toxicological terminology and behavior. <br /> 4.7 Decontamination Procedures <br /> 4.7.1 When possible, all necessary steps shall be taken to reduce or minimize contact with chemicals <br /> and impacted materials while performing field activities (e.g., avoid sitting or leaning on, walking <br /> through, dragging equipment over, tracking, or splashing potential or known impacted materials). <br /> 4.7.2 All personal decontamination activities shall be performed with an attendant(buddy)to provide <br /> assistance to personnel that are performing decontamination activities. An attendant may not be <br /> required for Level D equipment removal and decontamination. Depending on specific site hazards, <br /> attendants may be required to wear a level of protection that is equal to the required level in the <br /> exclusion zone. <br /> 4.7.3 All persons and equipment entering the EZ shall be considered contaminated, and thus, shall be <br /> properly decontaminated prior to entering the SZ. No equipment, including personal protective <br /> equipment or contaminated clothing shall be taken or worn into the SZ. <br /> 4.7.4 Decontamination procedures may vary based on site conditions and nature of the contaminant. If <br /> chemicals or decontamination solutions are used, care should be taken to minimize reactions <br /> between the solutions and contaminated materials. In addition, personnel shall assess the potential <br /> exposures created by the decontamination chemical(s)or solutions. The safety data sheets shall <br /> be reviewed, implemented, and filed by personnel contacting the chemicals/solutions. <br /> 4.7.5 All contaminated personal protective equipment(PPE)and decontamination materials shall be <br /> stored and disposed of in accordance with site-specific requirements identified in the approved <br /> work plan. <br /> 4.7.6 For all Level A and B ensembles, adequate supplied air shall be available to allow the employee to <br /> safely complete all necessary decontamination steps. <br /> 4.7.7 Where decontamination procedures involving radioactive materials are required,the removable <br /> limits for both personnel and equipment will be specified by a Certified Health Physicist or Certified <br /> Industrial Hygienist in the project's approved Radiation Protection Plan or approved safety planning <br /> document. <br /> 4.7.8 Materials Needed to Decontaminate Personnel and/or Equipment <br /> • The equipment required to perform decontamination may vary based on site-specific <br /> conditions and nature of the contaminant(s).The following equipment is commonly used for <br /> decontamination purposes: <br /> o Soft-bristle scrub brushes or long-handled brushes to remove contaminants; <br /> o Hoses, buckets of water or garden sprayers for rinsing; <br /> o Large plastic/galvanized wash tubs or children's wading pools for washing and rinsing <br /> solutions; <br /> o Large plastic garbage cans or similar containers lined with plastic bags for the storage of <br /> contaminated clothing and equipment; <br /> o Metal or plastic cans or drums for the temporary storage of contaminated liquids; <br /> o Paper or cloth towels for drying protective clothing and equipment; and <br /> o Poly or plastic sheeting to lay down and form the base for the CRZ, as well as to contain <br /> contaminants and decontamination fluids. <br /> Hazardous Waste Operations(S3AM-117-PR1) <br /> Revision 3 July31,2019 <br /> PRINTED COPIES ARE UNCONTROLLED.
