ACOM
SOP 200 - Decontamination Procedure
1 SUMMARY:
Proper steps to decontaminate equipment by the 3-step method are provided below.
Decontamination with this method will be conducted after the completion of purging each
ground water well, each groundwater sample, each soil sample (as needed), and before
taking any equipment blank samples. This is to ensure that equipment which comes into
contact with samples has been properly washed and rinsed with approved clean water to
avoid any cross contamination between samples. Equipment: Three 5-gallon buckets (or
similar), water (deionized [DI] or Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-free water
whichever is applicable), Liquinox®.
2 PROCEDURE:
• Step 1: Add clean water to three clean dedicated 5-gallon buckets. Cap the buckets
using the screw on lids, and secure into the bed of the truck by strapping them down and
locking the buckets in place. Load and secure two additional 5-gallon water jugs to
ensure clean water is always available.
• Step 2: Place the buckets on plastic sheeting to for spill containment. Label first bucket
"Soap" and add Liquinox°to the water. Label second bucket "Mid Rinse", and label third
bucket"Final Rinse". If a bucket spill occurs, use absorbent pads or paper towels on the
spill to prevent migration of water from the spill site.
• Step 3: Insert equipment in "Soap" bucket and thoroughly wash. If decontaminating a
water pump turn on pump inside bucket to allow soapy water to circulate completely
through the pump. After soapy water has circulated through the pump, the pump will be
turned off and the equipment will be moved to the "Mid Rinse" bucket. Repeat this step in
the "Final Rinse" bucket.
• Once equipment has been rinsed through the three buckets, collect any equipment blank
samples using the provided water from the lab. This is usually in a 1-liter amber bottle or
in a plastic bladder bag. Ensure that you have new nitrile gloves when collecting the
sample.
• If the water from one of the buckets becomes dirty or collects a strange odor immediately
during decontamination activities, dispose the water, rinse the bucket, and fill the bucket
with clean water.
• At the end of the day discard the water used to decontaminate the equipment from the 5-
gallon buckets into 55-gallon drums or 250-gallon tote. Rinse each bucket with clean
Page 1 of 2
