Under these conditions, personnel must be protected through the <br /> use of appropriate hearing protective devices. <br /> Hearing protection shall be worn: <br /> • In any situation where normal conversation cannot be heard at a distance of 3 feet regardless <br /> of the source of the noise or where noise levels as measured with approved noise monitoring <br /> equipment is above 85 dBA. <br /> • When operating gasoline or electric powered machinery. <br /> • When working within 25 feet of operating heavy equipment (earth working equipment, etc.) <br /> as working around this type of equipment can result in exposure to hazardous levels of noise <br /> (levels greater than 90 dBA). <br />
