colm
Quality Assurance/Quality Control Plan
Martin Metals Finishing Inc. (Former)
Stockton, California
4.1.4 Shallow Soil Sample Collection
Shallow soil samples will be collected between 0 and 3 feet below ground surface (ft bgs) using a hand
auger, shovel, or stainless-steel trowel. Appendix C-1 includes CDIM Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) 2.2
"Surface and Shallow Soil Sampling." Soil will be transferred directly from the sampling tool into a pre-cleaned
sample container(e.g., glass jar). Samplers will change gloves between collection of each sample to avoid cross-
contamination. Table C-2 summarizes sample containers, preservatives and holding times for the required soil
sample analysis.
4.1.5 Subslab Soil Gas Sample Collection
Vapor Pins will be installed in accordance with CDIM SOP 4.1 "Soil Vapor Sampling" in Appendix C-1.
The vapor pin setup will be allowed to equalize for approximately two hours prior to sampling. Samples will then
be collected following sample procedures compliant with the manufacturer's instructions and DTSC's Advisory-
Active Soil Gas Investigations(DTSC, 2015a). For each location, CDIM will perform a helium shroud test for real-
time leak detection by placing the shroud over the sampling train (including sample container). CDIM will fill the
shroud with helium and then use a helium detector2 to test air purged from the sample port. CDIM will then connect
a 1-liter, individually certified, summa canister to the sample port to collect the vapor sample over an approximately
five-minute duration. CDIM will record starting and ending pressure on each summa canister and on air sampling
data sheets (Appendix C-2).
4.1.6 Subsurface Soil Gas Sample Collection
For dual-nested soil gas well locations, soil boring advancement will be completed as described in Section
4.1.2 until the target depth of the deepest soil gas well is reached'. A temporary nested soil vapor well with two
depth intervals(5 and 15 ft bgs)will be installed. CDIM SOP 4.1 "Soil Vapor Sampling" in Appendix C-1 described
the installation process for nested wells and shows the typical nested soil vapor well construction, representative
of the wells to be installed at each sample location. Sample depth intervals of 5 and 15 ft bgs were selected to
determine VOC concentrations in shallow and deeper soils.
The dual-nested soil gas well setup will be allowed to equalize for approximately two hours prior to
sampling. Samples will then be collected using the same procedures described for sub-slab soil gas samples and
as outlined in CDIM SOP 4.1 "Soil Vapor Sampling" in Appendix C-1.
4.1.7 Soil Boring Completion
Completed borings will be closed with Portland cement grout to match existing surface conditions and to
comply with the requirements of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department(SJCEHD).
2 The helium detector will be calibrated and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Calibration
will be documented in a calibration log (Appendix C-2).
3 Soil boring locations to be completed as soil vapor probes will not be cleared using a hand auger to 5 ft bgs. Instead, direct-
push will begin from the ground surface to allow the minimum five feet of direct push borehole above the probe, allowing for
a two hour equilibration time per DTSC's Advisory-Active Soil Gas Investigations(DTSC, 2015a).
CDIM—Fairgrounds Industrial Park Page 8
