CON CIDIM
Corporate Safety Program
HSP-2. Respiratory Protection
°°°1• °° Rev. 1 08/23/2018
Supplied-Air An atmosphere-supplying respirator for which the source of breathing air is not
Respirator/Airline designed to be carried by the user.
Respirator
Tight-Fitting A respiratory inlet covering that forms a complete seal with the face.
Facepiece
User Seal Check An action conducted by the respirator user to determine if the respirator is
properly sealed on the face.
5.0 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS/PREREQUISITES
Air purifying respirators using chemical cartridges are "non-emergency" respiratory protective devices.
They should never be used in IDLH atmospheres or when oxygen less than 19.5% by volume is present.
All oxygen-deficient (less than 19.5% oxygen by volume) atmospheres are considered IDLH and require
the use of air-supplying respirator or SCBA. Air-purifying respirators do not protect against exposure to
certain chemicals. Respirator cartridges have a shelf life and a service life.
6.0 PROCEDURE
6.1 Respirator Selection
Respirators will be selected by the HSPM or the SHSO with the HSPM's concurrence. Selection will be
based on the type of hazard to which the worker is exposed, recognizing the physical and chemical
properties of the air contaminant and the concentration likely to be encountered. All respirators and
cartridges must be NIOSH-certified and shall be used in compliance with this certification.
The selected respirator must be adequate to protect the health of the worker and ensure compliance with
all other OSHA statutory and regulatory requirements, under routine and reasonably foreseeable
emergency situations.
A sufficient number of respirator models and sizes must be made available so that the respirator is
acceptable to (e.g., provides comfortable fit), and correctly fits, the user.
Specialists in respiratory protection (industrial hygienists, vendors, industrial hygiene consultants) should
be contacted in situations where there is concern about the correct selection of respiratory protection
equipment.
6.1.1 Gases and Vapors
For protection against gases and vapors, the following will be provided:
• An atmosphere-supplying respirator; or
• An air-purifying respirator, provided that the respirator is equipped with an end-of-service-life
indicator (ESLI) certified by NIOSH for the contaminant; or if there is no ESLI appropriate for
conditions in the workplace, a change schedule for canisters and cartridges is implemented
based on objective information or data that will ensure that canisters and cartridges are changed
before the end of their service life.
• If air-purifying respirators are used, the respirator cartridges are to be disposed at the end of each
work shift or at breakthrough, whichever occurs first, unless a different change schedule can be
substantiated by sufficient information and data approved by the HSPM.
