CDIM Corporate Safety Program
/P-P M HSP-4. Physical Hazards Management
01/22/2019
• Equipment tip-over or roll-over;
• Equipment not locked out during maintenance.
4.2.5 Ground-Worker Awareness and Safe Work Practices
To minimize the risk of heavy equipment-related injury, ground workers should:
• Wear hard hat, safety boots and high-visibility clothing when working around heavy mobile
equipment;
• Avoid positioning themselves in a blind spot or behind heavy equipment;
• Riding or using heavy equipment is prohibited unless you are trained and authorized to do so;
• Avoid setting up their work area near heavy mobile equipment. The operator may not see them if
they are bending over to work or grab a tool;
• Avoid walking or working under a suspended load;
• Make eye contact with and alert the operator—and ensure the operator sees you—before
approaching a vehicle;
• Ride only in approved seats and wear a seat belt;
• Never cross barriers or taped areas at a jobsite;
• Stay outside the limited-access zone or swing radius around heavy equipment;
• Heavy equipment can move in unexpected ways. Take extra precautions if you are working at a
new jobsite or near equipment that you are unfamiliar with;
• Discuss heavy equipment hazards and awareness at each jobsite during the daily safety meeting;
• When preparing to work near heavy equipment, use spotters and increase visibility, create barriers
to increase visibility and prevent motorized vehicles from entering your work space;
• Maintain awareness of surroundings at all times.
Often, when workers are around heavy equipment every day, they can become accustomed to the
presence of heavy equipment, and not giving much thought to the risks. Taking some time to understand and
follow safety rules—and staying alert while on the job—can help construction workers stay safe.
4.3 Head Injury F
All personnel will be required to wear a hard hat during construction activity. The hat must be worn
properly and not altered in any way that would lessen the degree of protection offered. All hard hats will meet
ANSI Standard Z89.1.
4.4 Foot Injury Prevention
Steel toe safety boots will be required for all onsite personnel. To afford maximum protection, all safety
boots will meet ANSI Standard Z41.1/75.
Page 4 of 7
