Heat and Cold Stress Management <br /> ENGINEERING Rev. 0 5/21/2020 <br /> METHODS FOR DETERMINING WORK CATEGORIES: <br /> LIGHT, MODERATE, HEAVY, VERY HEAVY <br /> Examples of light, medium, heavy work are: <br /> • Light hand work: writing, hand knitting <br /> • Heavy hand work: typewriting <br /> • Heavy work with one arm: hammering in nails (shoemaker, upholsterer) <br /> • Light work with two arms: filing metal, planing wood, raking the garden <br /> • Moderate work with the body: cleaning a floor, beating a carpet <br /> • Heavy work with the body: railroad track laying, digging, barking trees <br /> Workload category is determined by averaging metabolic rates for the tasks and then ranking them as <br /> follows. <br /> • Light work: up to 200 kcal/hour <br /> • Medium work: 200-350 kcal/hour <br /> • Heavy work: 350-500 kcal/hour <br /> • Very heavy work (strenuous)work: >500 kcal/hour <br /> Data in Table A-1 may be used to calculate an estimate of the metabolic rate for specific work activities. <br /> An example calculation is show in Table A-2. Examples of typical work activities and their categories are <br /> provided in Table A-3. <br />
