b. Methodologies
Solid:
Samples will be collected by Treatment Plant Operators or by City sub-contractors. The IN
sample will be collected from a valve on the discharge piping directly into a clean steel
bucket. The sample should be collected during normal treatment operation to ensure it is
representative of final settled sludge. Care should be taken to prevent spills or overfilling of
the bucket. The collection valve is located within the filter skid containment area. If a spill
should occur, follow procedures for spill clean-up.The EFF-01 sample will be collected from
the disposal cart by using a clean hand shovel and placing filter cake into a clean steel
bucket, then mixing with a steel sampling trowel to ensure a representative sample. Mixed
samples shall then be placed into clean wide-mouth 8-ounce glass jars using the sampling
trowel. Per analytical laboratory—no sample preservation is needed forthe solids sampling.
No eating, smoking, or drinking should be performed around sample collection equipment
or open sample containers. Two(2)jars are needed for one sample. All treatment equipment
(Filter Press) and vehicles in the immediate vicinity should be turned off when performing
sample collection. Any left-over filter cake in the steel bucket shall be returned to the
disposal bin.
The following PPEshould be worn when collecting samples:
■ Clean Rubber Gloves
■ Protective clothing(overalls,work boots)
■ N95 dust mask
■ Safety Glasses
The following sampling equipment should be used, or an equivalent:
■ Steel bucket, with lid
■ Steel trowel, or hand shovel
■ Glass Sample Jars(provided by analytical laboratory)
Liquid:
Samples will be collected by Treatment Plant Operators or by City sub-contractors. The EFF-
02 sample will be collected from a valve on the discharge piping(leading to the headworks)
directly into a clean sample container. Place a bucket underneath the sample valve and
sampling container to capture any excess liquid. The sample shall be collected during
normal operating conditions to ensure it is representative. The collection valve is located
within the filter skid containment area. If a spill should occur, follow procedures for spill
clean-up. If the sample containers require preservatives, care should be taken not to overfill
the containers. No eating, smoking, or drinking should be performed around sample
3
