v
30 May 1996
AGE-NC Project No. 96-0224
and labeled. Samples were placed in a chilled container and relinquished under chain-of-custody to
an on-site mobile laboratory(Mobile One Laboratory Inc.: MOL).
Ms. Linda Turkatte of the PHS-EHD was on-site during the soil sampling and laboratory analysis of
L the samples.
4 3.2. SOIL LOGGING AND PROBING COMPLETION
Soil was extruded from the remaining brass sleeves and screened for the presence of hydrocarbon
vapors. The soil was then described in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (see
Probe Boring Logs, Appendix B).
. All probe borings were backfilled to surface grade with Portland Cement.
'r 3.3. LABORATORY ANALYSIS
Soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline and diesel (TPH-
`' g and TPH-d),volatile aromatics(benzene,toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes: BTE&X) and methyl-
tert-butyl ether(MTBE)in accordance with EPA methods 5030/8015m, 8020 and 8260, respectively.
4.0. FINDINGS
4.1. STRATIGRAPHY
During the advancement of probe borings P1,P2 and P3, brown silty sand was encountered from the
surface to depths of approximately 5 feet bsg. Silty clay was then encountered from 5 to 10 feet bsg.
Brown silty sand was encountered again at 15 feet. A stiff clay layer was encountered at
approximately 15 to 16 linear feet in probing P2, and the probe boring could not be advanced further.
Silty clay was then encountered at 20 feet bsg and brown silty sand was encountered at 25 feet bsg.
Hydrocarbon odors were concentrated in the soil between 5 and 15 feet in depth.
During the advancement of probe boring P4,gray-brown silty clay was encountered from the surface
to approximately 25 linear feet. Silty sand was encountered from 25 linear feet to total depth of the
probe boring(30 linear feet).Hydrocarbon odors were encountered from samples collected at depths
ranging from 15 to 25 linear feet_
V
V
