3. SOIL CLASSIFICATION
3.1 Overview
This SOP was prepared to direct field personnel in the method for describing soil samples.
The SOP conforms to the American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM) Standard
D 2488, Standard Practice for Description and Identification of Soils, ASTM Standard
D-2487-11, Standard Practice for Classification of Soils for Engineering Purposes, and
other pertinent technical publications. The objective of soil sample description is to
provide consistent geological information useful for the purpose of hydrogeological or
geotechnical evaluation of a site. The Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) is the
suggested classification method.
3.2 Equipment
• PPE and air monitoring equipment as required by HASP;
• Grain size chart;
• Measuring tape or folding ruler at least five feet in length;
• Polyethylene sheeting;
• Munsell color chart;
• Spoon or small spatula;
• Water.
0 '/2" reinforcing rod (rebar); and
• 5-pound hammer.
3.3 Documentation
• DFRs;
• Soil boring logs;
• Camera; and
• Note cards or white board for photo documentation.
6
