An outline of the method detection limits <br /> (MDL) process is shown in the flowcharts in Appendix 3. <br /> 1.2 This procedure is consistent with the method MDL requirements of the U.S. EPA in 40CFR Part 136 <br /> Appendix B, August 28, 2017, Revision 2. This shall be referred to as the "Method"for this document. <br /> 1.3 This procedure is also consistent with requirements for establishing detection limits and limits of <br /> quantitation (LOQ) in the 2009 and the 2016 TNI Standard. <br /> 1.4 Additional requirements for compliance with the DoD/DOE Quality Systems Manual (QSM) Version 5.3 <br /> are provided in Appendix 2. <br /> 2) Scope <br /> 2.1 This procedure is applicable to methods for which low-level spikes can be reliably prepared. <br /> 2.2 This procedure is not applicable to methods such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), color, <br /> temperature, pH, specific conductance, and any method for which low-level spikes are not reliably prepared. <br /> Gravimetric tests may not be applicable for low level spike, but the MDL based on method blanks may be <br /> applicable. Nor is it applicable to methods that do not produce results with a continuous distribution, such as <br /> methods for aquatic toxicity, presence/absence methods, microbiological methods that involve counting <br /> colonies, and radiological counting methods. The MDL for titration is based on the smallest unit of measure <br /> that can be observed within the tolerance range of the measurement device. <br /> 2.3 If a mandated test method, applicable regulations, or contractual requirements include protocols for <br /> determining MDLs or quantitation limits different than are given in this procedure, they shall take precedence <br /> over this procedure. For example, isotope dilution methods for dioxins or PCB congeners may utilize sample- <br /> specific estimated detection limit (EDL) conventions for reporting rather than MDLs. <br /> 3) Safety <br /> 3.1 There are no specific safety hazards associated with this SOP. <br /> 3.2 During the course of performing this procedure it may be necessary to go into laboratory areas to <br /> consult with appropriate staff members; therefore, employees performing this procedure must be familiar <br /> with the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manual, laboratory-specific EHSM Addendum, and take <br /> appropriate precautions and wear appropriate attire and safety glasses. <br /> 4) Definitions <br /> • Method Detection Limit (MDL) The MDL is the minimum measured concentration of a substance that <br /> can be reported with 99% confidence that the measured concentration or amount is distinguishable from <br /> method blank results.
