Quality Control <br /> 9.1 Field Quality Control Samples <br /> Evaluation of field sampling procedures requires the collection and evaluation of field QC <br /> samples. To provide a means of assessing data quality resulting from the field sampling program, <br /> collection and submittal to the analytical laboratory includes field blanks, equipment blanks, and <br /> field duplicates. <br /> Field Blanks <br /> A field blank is a clean, analyte-free sample which is carried to the sampling site and then exposed <br /> to sampling conditions. The field blank is intended to provide information about contaminants that <br /> may be introduced during the sample collection, storage, and transportation of field samples. <br /> Field blanks will be collected at a rate of one per 20 field samples for the full analytical suite. The <br /> sample container is assigned a unique identification number in the field. <br /> Equipment Blanks <br /> An equipment blank, sometimes referred to as a rinsate blank, is a sample of analyte-free water <br /> poured over or through decontaminated field sampling equipment prior to the collection of <br /> environmental samples. It is used to assess the adequacy of the decontamination process in <br /> terms of contamination from the total sampling process when decontaminated sampling <br /> equipment is used to collect samples. Equipment blanks will be collected, at a rate of one per 20 <br /> field samples collected for the full analytical suite. The sample container is assigned a unique <br /> identification in the field. <br /> Matrix Spike/Matrix Spike Duplicates (as applicable) <br /> A MS/MSD sample is an aliquot of sample spiked with a known mass and concentration of specific <br /> analytes. The spiking occurs prior to sample preparation and analysis at the laboratory. To allow <br /> the analytical laboratory to run MS/MSD analyses, additional sample volumes will be collected in <br /> the field to provide sufficient sample material for the laboratory to perform the additional analyses. <br /> MS/MSDs will be collected at a rate of one per 20 field samples for the full analytical suite, as <br /> applicable to the analytical method. If possible, MS/MSD samples should be collected from a <br /> location expected to be relatively free from contamination as these will be used for laboratory <br /> quality control purposes. <br /> Field Duplicates <br /> Field duplicates will be collected at selected locations to provide estimates of the total sampling <br /> and analytical precision. Field duplicates will be collected at a rate of one per 10 field samples <br /> for the full analytical suite to provide estimates of the analytical precision. The field duplicates will <br /> be handled and analyzed in the same manner as the environmental samples; however,the chain- <br /> of-custody forms will not indicate which samples are duplicates. The field duplicates will be <br /> collocated duplicates that are collected simultaneously or immediately after the parent sample.
