' Global Presence Personal Attention HERST & ASSOCIATES, INC RECEIVED ' Mr.Rick Jaime JUN 3 0 2011 California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation 7650 S.Newcastle Road/P.O.Box 213004 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH Stockton,CA 95213-9004 PERMIT/SERVICES June 29,2011 Dear Mr.Jaime: Summary of Northern California Youth Correctional Center Sampling Results May 2011 ' On May 24, 2011, sampling was performed at the Northern California Youth Correctional Center (NCYCC) to provide supplemental information regarding volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations at the indoor faucet location (Table 1) included in other recent sampling events. ' Sampling was performed by Herst&Associates, Inc. VOC analyses were performed by TestAmerica, Inc. ' Forward, Inc. has completed a project to provide a 12 inch, looped, city waterline system to the NCYCC facility. The new city waterline system began supplying city water to the NCYCC on Tuesday, January 18, 2011. Therefore, during the May 24, 2011 sampling event, the NCYCC was ' being supplied solely by the new city waterline system. Two common municipal water supply disinfectant bi-products (bromodichloromethane and ' chloroform) were detected at the indoor faucet sample location during the May 2011 sampling event. Bromodichloromethane and chloroform are trihalomethanes. Trihalomethanes are commonly produced as part of the chlorination process utilized by municipal water supplies. The drinking water standard for trihalomethanes is 80 parts per billion(gg/1). The concentration of trihalomethanes at the indoor faucet in May 2011 (43.6 µg/1)is in compliance with the drinking water standard. Quality assurance samples collected during the May 2011 sampling event included a field blank at the indoor faucet, a trip blank, and a duplicate sample at the indoor faucet. The field blank sample at the indoor faucet location was collected to provide an indication of VOCs present in the ambient indoor air or the laboratory analytical process. The trip blank sample was collected to provide an indication of any VOCs associated with shipment or the laboratory analytical process. The duplicate sample was collected to provide an indication of sampling and laboratory testing reproducibility. The May 2011 field blank at the indoor faucet yielded no detections. No VOCs were detected in the trip blank.
