Ferrero, M.P.H. , Director <br /> Public Health Laboratory <br /> RE: Procedure For Disposal of "Rabies" and Carcasses: <br /> Except for the portion of brain material held in freezer, brains <br /> and carcasses are disposed of in the next infectious Waste pickup_ <br /> The Day of Pick-up: Wednesday 8:.00 A_M. <br /> The microbiologist (rabies) will: <br /> 1. Discard items into Biohazardous Waste Box. (If needed, <br /> assemble box provided by Integrated Environmental <br /> Systems. Line with large red biohazard bags provided by <br /> Integrated Environmental <br /> Systems) . <br /> 2. Animal carcasses are placed in a smaller biohazard bag if <br /> not already in one, and closed with a rubber band. To <br /> contain smell, skunks may need to be discarded in a bucket. <br /> Animal brains received in metal paint cans are removed <br /> from cans and placed in a biohazard bag before discarding. <br /> (The paint cans are autoclaved before re-use.) <br /> Animal brains received from Dr. Ferguson are discarded in <br /> the coffee can used to transport them to the laboratory. <br /> 3 . The biohazard bags and coffee cans with carcasses and <br /> brains are placed in the Biohazardous Waste Box. Do not <br /> overfill or push down to add more waste. Other infectious <br /> materials can be added to fill the box. The large red <br /> biohazard bag is individually closed with a rubber band. <br /> Close lid and secure with masking tape. <br /> The media room laboratory assistant will: <br /> 4 . Transport the box to the Biohazardous Waste bin located <br /> in east parking lot by 8 : 30 A.M. on day of pick up. <br /> (revised 9/10/91) <br />
