Traffic management is variable based on the type of road, the amount of traffic, and the type and
number of opportunities where traffic can be pulled off the road for a short period. Where there
are roads that are divided by medians, traffic will be allowed to flow on the side opposite the
race. It may sound slightly onerous, but it is not as bad as it sounds. CHP has been able to
perfect this type of closure and has worked closely with local PD and the sheriffs. For the 2006
event, that took place over eight days and 700 miles of roads, there was not a single complaint
with the way the traffic was managed.
On February 21st, Stage 3 will depart Stockton at 11:00 AM in route to a finish in San Jose. After
two neutral laps in downtown Stockton, the race will work its way to Hwy 4 and make a left turn
onto Roberts Road at 11:14 AM. The route through Sam Joaquin County will be as follows: right
turn onto Howard Road, left turn onto Tracy Blvd, right turn onto Lammers, left turn onto Corral
Hollow, right turn onto Byron, and a left turn onto Grant Line which will take the race out of San
Joaquin County at 12:12 PM and into Alameda County. Total distance on San Joaquin County
roads is 25.17 miles that the race will cover in 58 minutes. Specific details about the route can
be found in the course map and course log.
CHP, Caltrans, Stockton, and Tracy have reviewed this route and we have their full
endorsement.
Drawing 1.3 million spectators raises a lot of eyebrows...and concerns. The vast majority of
these crowds came in three areas: start cities, finish cities, and various long and steep climbs
the riders encountered. Aside from some isolated areas, there were relatively few spectators
along the course. Many people will watch from their driveway. We do not anticipate anything
but a few spectators along this portion of Stage 3.
We saw little to no trash along the route for the 2006 Amgen Tour of California. The fans along
the way were well behaved and took whatever trash they may have generated; with them when
they left the area they were viewing the race.
We do not sell anything along the route nor do we have music. We are totally self supported
with doctors and ambulances that follow in the race. The race is heavily advertised through a
variety of media outlets. There will be live TV coverage on VERSUS on Feb 18tH, 24tH and 25tH
There will be a one-hour show on VERSUS on the evenings of Feb 19th, 20tH 21St, 22nd and
23 . We will also be streaming live coverage of the race on the Internet.
