percent of ASTM D1557 maximum dry density up to 3 feet below the thickness of the new
asphalt concrete, and shall be compacted to 95 percent maximum dry density within the 3-foot
area below the new pavement or shoulder. All engineered fill material under structures shall be
compacted to 95 percent of ASTM D1557 maximum dry density. Compaction of materials by
ponding and jetting is prohibited. Do not backfill in freezing weather or where the material in the
trench is already frozen or is muddy, except as authorized. Where settlements greater than the
tolerance allowed herein for grading occur in trenches and pits due to improper compaction,
excavate to the depth necessary to rectify the problem, then backfill and compact the
excavation as specified herein and restore the surface to the required elevation. Coordinate _
backfilling with testing of utilities.
3.05 CLEAN UP
After completing all earthwork, the Contractor shall leave the site in a neat and clean condition,
doing all such grading as is required by the plans.
