percent of ASTM D1557 maximum dry density up to 3 feet below the thickness of the new <br /> asphalt concrete, and shall be compacted to 95 percent maximum dry density within the 3-foot <br /> area below the new pavement or shoulder. All engineered fill material under structures shall be <br /> compacted to 95 percent of ASTM D1557 maximum dry density. Compaction of materials by <br /> ponding and jetting is prohibited. Do not backfill in freezing weather or where the material in the <br /> trench is already frozen or is muddy, except as authorized. Where settlements greater than the <br /> tolerance allowed herein for grading occur in trenches and pits due to improper compaction, <br /> excavate to the depth necessary to rectify the problem, then backfill and compact the <br /> excavation as specified herein and restore the surface to the required elevation. Coordinate _ <br /> backfilling with testing of utilities. <br /> 3.05 CLEAN UP <br /> After completing all earthwork, the Contractor shall leave the site in a neat and clean condition, <br /> doing all such grading as is required by the plans. Any existing features, structures, and other _ <br /> facilities damaged or affected by the work shall be replaced, repaired, or restored to their <br /> original condition or better. <br /> 3.06 REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF TOPSOIL _ <br /> A. Do not begin removal of topsoil until limits of work are marked, temporary <br /> construction fencing is in place and erosion control devices are properly installed. <br /> B. In open areas, remove topsoil within the following limits. <br /> 1. Width of trench plus 10 feet on both sides of trench, except for paved <br /> areas and other areas without topsoil. <br /> C. Prior to removing topsoil, remove trash, debris, excessive vegetation, or and <br /> other waste material that may be encountered. Grass, weeds and other <br /> vegetation less than 12 inches in height do not need to be removed prior to <br /> stripping topsoil. <br /> D. Set topsoil material aside and maintain separation from the remainder of <br /> excavated trench material. <br /> 1. Topsoil may be stockpiled near the work or moved to an off-site stockpile <br /> area. No stockpile areas have been designated on the Drawings. <br /> 2. When topsoil is stockpiled along excavations, maintain edge of the <br /> stockpile a minimum of 6 feet away from the edge of the excavation. <br /> 3. Limit height of stockpiles to 6 feet. <br /> 4. Do not stockpile topsoil within tree protection zones. <br /> 5.
