Section 02210 <br /> EXCAVATION,BACKFILLING,AND COMPACTION FOR UTILITIES <br /> B. Tests <br /> The Contractor is responsible for quality control and shall perform sufficient testing to <br /> ensure compliance with these specifications. Test results shall be submitted to the <br /> Construction Manager. The Construction Manager may take samples and perform moisture <br /> content, compaction, and density tests during placement of backfill materials to spot-check <br /> compliance with these specifications. The Contractor shall remove surface material at <br /> locations designated by the Construction Manager and provide such assistance as necessary <br /> for sampling and testing. The Construction Manager may direct the Contractor to construct <br /> inspection trenches in compacted or consolidated backfill to determine that the Contractor <br /> has complied with these specifications. <br /> Tests undertaken by the Contractor shall be in accordance with the following: <br /> Moisture content ASTM D3017 <br /> Density in-place ASTM D1556 or ASTM D2922 <br /> Moisture-density relationships ASTM D1557 <br /> 1.03 SUBMITTALS <br /> The Contractor shall submit information in accordance with Special Provisions Section <br /> SP-08, SUBMITTALS, to substantiate compliance with this specification. Submittals shall <br /> include the following: <br /> A. Material certifications <br /> B. Test results <br /> C. Description of disposal site for excess material and any required permits <br /> 1.04 DEFINITIONS <br /> A. Backfill <br /> Material used in refilling a trench or other excavation above the pipe or utility. <br /> B. Compaction <br /> The process of mechanically stabilizing a material by increasing its density at a controlled <br /> moisture condition.
