Section 02210 <br /> EXCAVATION,BACKFILLING,AND COMPACTION FOR UTILITIES <br /> K. Bedding <br /> Material used in refilling the trench from the trench bottom to the pipe springline. <br /> PART 2 - PRODUCTS <br /> 2.01 MATERIALS <br /> A. Sand <br /> Natural sand or sand produced from crushed gravel or crushed rock, maximum size 1/4 in., <br /> 95% shall pass a No. 4 sieve, free from a lay and organic material, with a maximum of 8% <br /> passing the No. 200 sieve. <br /> B. Bedding Material <br /> Bedding material shall be a select granular material free from organic matter and of such <br /> size and gradation that the specified compaction can be readily attained. As a minimum, <br /> materials shall have a sand equivalent value of not less than 20 and shall conform to the <br /> following gradation: <br /> U.S. Standard Percent by <br /> Sieve Size Weight Passing <br /> 3/4 inch 100 <br /> No.4 35-100 <br /> No. 30 20-100 <br /> The coefficient of uniformity shall be 3 or greater. The material may be clean natural sand <br /> or gravel, select trench excavation or a mixture thereof. <br /> C. Intermediate Backfill <br /> Intermediate backfill shall conform to specifications for bedding material for this contract. <br /> D. Backfill Material <br /> Backfill material shall be unclassified material which is free from peat, wood,roots, bark, <br /> debris, garbage, rubbish or other extraneous material. The maximum size of stone shall not <br /> exceed 3 in. Material shall be non-expansive in nature with a plasticity index less than 12 <br /> and a liquid limit less than 30. The organic content shall be less than 3 percent.
