Section 02310
HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING
At no time shall excess or residual materials be washed down to surface waters or storm
drains. Note that permits being obtained by the District for these bores do not authorize any
discharges to surface water, including drilling mud.
The Contractor shall be fully responsible for taking all reasonable and necessary actions as
required by the Contract Documents for preventing the potential for an inadvertent return,
for minimizing the volume of any release, for maintaining full circulation of drilling fluids
and for restoring circulation. The Contractor is responsible for the cleanup of all discharges
of drilling fluids originating on land.
3.06 TRACKING WIRE PLACEMENT
The Contractor shall submit plans showing proposed location for any tracking grid wire
system that may be required. Approval must be obtained from the Construction Manager
before any tracking wire is placed.
The Contractor shall be responsible for avoiding impact to protected species and crops
during placement of the grid wire system. The Contractor shall notify the Construction
Manager a minimum of two working days prior to placement of any wire in the slough areas
in order for an environmental specialist to be on site during placement.
3.07 PILOT HOLE
The Contractor shall at all times provide and maintain instrumentation which will accurately
locate the pilot hole and provide readings of inclination and azimuth; measure drill string
axial and torsional loads; and measure drilling fluid discharge rate and standpipe pressure.
A minimum of one reading shall be taken for each segment of drill pipe (approximately
every 30 feet). The Contractor shall calculate and provide to the Construction Manager the
depth, right and left position, and radius of curvature. A log of all recorded readings shall
be maintained and will become a part of the record information to be supplied by the
Contractor to the Construction Manager. The Contractor shall take all necessary provisions
to eliminate interference from down hole tools, drill pipe, and magnetic fields.
Entry and exit points shall be accurately located as shown on the plans. Should the achieved
exit point location not meet with the required accuracy described in Paragraph 1.08,
Engineering and Design, the Contractor shall withdraw the pilot stem and adjust the bore
trajectory as required to meet the accuracy requirements.
If a completed or partially completed drill hole is not in compliance with the Contract
Documents, redrilling of all or any part of the hole will be required at no additional cost to
the District. Any change in the drill profile and trajectory must be approved by the District.
Walnut Grove Sewer Project (Conformed) 02310-15 SA0160401
March 2008 Nasa0160401\Specs\WG Conform\Dia 2\02310.doc
