A=COM <br />4.9.3 Using standard highway signs for internal construction worksite traffic control shall assist workers in <br />recognizing the route they are to use at the construction site. <br />4.9.4 Traffic Signs <br />• Signage shall be of acceptable standards, in good condition, clean, legible, suited to the <br />purpose, and meeting local legislation requirements. <br />• Signage shall be secured or weighted. <br />• Routinely inspect signage for placement, cleanliness, and physical damage. <br />• Cover road traffic control signage when no activity is present. <br />4.10 Traffic Control Devices <br />4.10.1 Standard traffic control devices, signals, and message boards shall instruct drivers to follow a path <br />away from where work is being done. <br />4.10.2 The competent person shall determine the approved traffic control devices such as cones, barrels, <br />barricades, and delineator posts that shall be used as part of the Traffic Control Plan. <br />4.11 Work Zone Protections <br />4.11.1 Various styles of concrete, water, sand, collapsible barriers, crash cushions, and truck -mounted <br />attenuators shall be used to limit motorist intrusions into the construction work zone, as <br />appropriate. <br />4.11.2 All AECOM staff shall be made aware of controls established by the AECOM and the constructor. <br />4.11.3 AECOM staff shall wear the required safety apparel at all times. <br />4.11.4 In the absence of a constructor, when AECOM is the constructor, or when AECOM staff are in the <br />field alone—e.g., investigations, surveys—all appropriate Department of Transportation traffic <br />control standards and devices shall be observed and placed in position. <br />4.11.5 The work zone shall be made safe by its separation from traffic. <br />4.12 Flagging <br />4.12.1 Flag persons and others providing temporary traffic control shall wear high visibility retro -reflective <br />clothing in compliance with local legislation. <br />4.12.2 Flag persons shall be provided with sufficient breaks, and shall not be permitt <br />ed to work alone for <br />extended periods as per local legislation. <br />4.12.3 Flag persons shall stand in a safe position, be clearly visible, have an unobstructed view of <br />approaching traffic, and be positioned a suitable distance away or from the work area (a distance <br />permitting vehicles to slow down or stop before reaching the work area) unless circumstances or <br />space requirements, such as working at or near an intersection, dictate otherwise. <br />4.12.4 Drivers should be warned in advance with signs that there shall be a Flag person ahead. <br />4.12.5 Flag person should use STOP/SLOW signs or paddles. The STOP sign should be octagonal with a <br />red background and white lett <br />ers and border. The SLOW sign should be octagonal with an orange <br />background and black letters and a border. <br />4.12.6 "Flag Person Ahead" signs shall be posted in advance of each flag person's station. Such signs <br />shall be removed promptly when the Flagging operation terminates. <br />4.13 Lighting <br />4.13.1 Flag person stations should be illuminated. Lighting for workers on foot and equipment operators is <br />to be at least 5 foot candles (54 Lux) or greater. <br />4.13.2 <br />Highway &Road Work (S3AM-308-PRI) <br />Where available lighting is not sufficient, flares or chemical <br />lighting should be used. <br />4.13.3 <br />Glare affecting workers and motorists should be controlled <br />or eliminated. <br />Revision 3 December 16, 2016 <br />PRINTED COPIES ARE UNCONTROLLED.
