Printed on:Monday 06/03/2024 10:44 AM 29C0035/AAAU/128915Pageof3
Department of Transportation - Division of Maintenance Structure Maintenance & Investigations
8
UNDERWATER INVESTIGATION DETAILS
STEEL INVESTIGATION DETAILS
SCOPE AND ACCESS
The channel had 12 feet of water flowing under Span 9 at the time of the inspection. All elements were dry, except for the lower portions
of Columns 1 and 2 of Bent 10. The deck was inspected by having a driver slowly drive a vehicle while the inspector took pictures of
defects. The underside of the deck, superstructure, and substructure were inspected from the ground under the bridge. A complete
routine bridge inspection was performed.
The most recent underwater investigation was performed on 7/12/2021. SM&I divers conducted a thorough visual underwater
investigation of Bent 10. No significant structural defects were noted on either columns of Bent 10.
This structure is on a 60-month underwater investigation cycle. The next underwater investigation is due 7/12/2026.
NUMBERING CONVENTION
The as-built plans use stationing and layout that is reverse of that used by Structures Maintenance & Investigations. In this report the
standard SM&I convention is used. Abutment 1 is the south abutment.
DECK AND ROADWAY
There are 0.1 inch wide pattern cracks, spaced 1.5 feet apart on average, in the AC approach at Abutment 1. There are several 0.1 inch
wide transeverse cracks in the AC approach at Abutment 11. Refer to Photos 1 and 2.
The Abutment 11 right approach rail paving is cracked. The paving appears to have been underminined until it had insusfficient support
and then collapsed. The posts appear to have less embeddment depth and may not function as originally intended. Refer to Photo 3.
SUBSTRUCTURE
There is a 12 foot x 20 foot x 8 foot erosion gully in the front slope of Abutment 11. Refer to Photo 4.
WATERWAY
Structures Hydraulics has requested that special attention be given to channel migration toward Bent 9 as the pile cap is at a higher
elevation than the thalwag. No issues were observed during this investigation.
INSPECTION COMMENTARY
1 - FreshWater TypeB - Routine UWDive Type
Next UWI 07/12/2026UWI Frequency months 60UWI Required Y Last UWI 07/12/2021
- NOT APPLICABLE FOR THIS BRIDGE.
CONDITION INFORMATION
SPECIAL INSPECTION INFORMATION
