Additionally, there is one more set of bevel gears, three sets of spur gears, and one <br />main drive pinion mating up to the rack gear. The rack is fixed to the pivot pier structure. As the main drive pinion turns about the ring <br />gear, the swing span is opened. All four end wedges and both center wedges are actuated by a common gear and shaft system that <br />connects to the gasoline engine by a lever operated clutch. At the end of the drive lines, each wedge has a crank shaft and <br />connecting rod. Rotation of the wedge crank shafts withdraw or engage the end and center wedges. All four end wedges and the two <br />center wedges engage steel support pedestals fixed to the end and center piers. The end centering pins <br />The engine is original from the 1930's and has exceeded its operational life and should be rebuilt. The clutch engagement coupling <br />jaws are worn. The transmission should be rebuilt. All the drive machinery bearings have excessive clearances from wear. <br />**Update (05/10/23) Condition still present. <br />(05/10/23) All of the open gearing needs to be cleaned and regreased. <br />Mech/Elect (06/03/2021) The bridge has no control system other than the operator. Lever actuated limit switches give indicating lights <br />in the control room only. <br />Mech/Elect (06/03/2021) The pier protection consists of a timber dolphin upstream and downstream of the swing pier (Pier 7). There <br />are also remnants of fenders at Piers 6 & 8. <br />(06/03/2021) The dolphins appear in fair condition and there was no drift accumulating at the dolphins or the piers. The exposed tops <br />of the timber piles are deteriorated and several have vegetation growing from the top or large checks in the piles. <br />Mech/Elect (06/03/2021) The bridge has a single unpowered traffic gate at each end of the fixed spans that must be manually <br />operated by the operator before a bridge opening. <br />Mech/Elect (06/03/2021) The bridge house is a steel frame building with metal siding located on the south side of Pier 7. <br />(06/03/2021) The bridge house is a steel frame building with metal siding located on the south side of Pier 7.
