Printed on:Friday 12/13/2024 02:52 PM 29C0314/AAAW/147520Pageof3
Department of Transportation - Division of Maintenance Structure Maintenance & Investigations
7
UNDERWATER INVESTIGATION DETAILS
STEEL INVESTIGATION DETAILS
SCOPE AND ACCESS
The water depth was approximately 5 feet in Span 1 through Span 4, with Bents 2 through 4 submerged during this inspection. Spans 1
and 4 were accessible. The remaining inaccessible substructure and portions of the superstructure were sighted from the embankments
with the aid of binoculars. All visible elements were fully inspected. A complete routine inspection was performed.
An Underwater Investigation was performed by the Caltrans Underwater Team on 08/05/2020 and included the elements inaccessible
from the banks. For more information, see the 08/05/2020 inspection report or the relevant elements in the element table.
MISCELLANEOUS
The deck planks and stringers in Span 1 to Span 4 were replaced on 05/26/2022. (See Photos 3 and 5 dated 09/22/2022).
DECK AND ROADWAY
There is a hole up to 12 inches in diameter in the AC approach on the left side of Abutment 5. It appears the soil behind the timber
lagging at Abutment 5 has eroded away leaving a cavity in the soil below the AC. (See Photo 1).
SUBSTRUCTURE
There is loose soil on the slopes and behind the timber lagging wingwalls at both abutments. (See Photo 3 dated 09/15/2020).
There is a missing section of timber lagging wingwall up to 2 feet wide x 4 feet tall on the left side of Abutment 1 exposing the material
behind the abutment. (See Photo 2).
A section of the timber lagging wingwall on the left side of Abutment 5 is broken and is pushed outward up to 6 inches and downward up
to 4 inches. (See Photo 3).
There is an erosion hole developing behind the timber lagging at the left side of Abutment 5. (See Photo 1). The previously reported
erosion hole behind the timber lagging on the right side of Abutment 5 was backfilled during the 05/26/2022 repairs. (See Photo 4).
SAFE LOAD CAPACITY
The load rating for this structure was reviewed by SM&I Ratings Branch under request number 11795. A Load Rating Summary Sheet
dated 06/12/2023 is on file for this structure. While this report does not include a check of that analysis, it does verify that the structural
conditions observed during this inspection are consistent with those assumed in that analysis. The current rating is based on BrR 7.4.0
dated 06/12/2023.
INSPECTION COMMENTARY
1 - FreshWater TypeB - Routine UWDive Type
Next UWI 08/05/2025UWI Frequency months 60UWI Required Y Last UWI 08/05/2020
- NOT APPLICABLE FOR THIS BRIDGE.
CONDITION INFORMATION
SPECIAL INSPECTION INFORMATION
