Printed on: Wednesday 06/12/2024 01:43 PM 29C0484/DSMI/127189Page of4
Department of Transportation - Division of Maintenance Structure Maintenance & Investigations
10
SCOPE AND ACCESS
The waterway is tidal. The inspection was timed at lowest tide during daylight.
The deck and soffit of Span 1 and a crawl space under Span 1 were dry.
The depth of water at the toe end of the ramp measured 8.0 feet where the deck was submerged in 2.0 feet of water. The deck of Span 2
was partially submerged at lowest tide with rock slope protection underneath limiting access.
A kayak, waders, wading boots, knee pads, flash lights were on site. The deck of the ferry when parked next to the toe of the bridge, life
vests, strong flashlights, and a 20 foot extendible pole for both probing and use with a mirror were essential for inspections on and under
the structure. The ferry operator, Yeni, was helpful in moving the ferry near the ramp areas to provide inspection access.
There was litter in the channel, and partially submerged decayed boats which are noted as precautions for future inspections with
kayaks, but these did not hinder access during the inspection.
A complete routine bridge inspection was performed.
NUMBERING CONVENTION
In the Caltrans convention, the forward direction of Eight Mile Road is from west to east, and the beginning of the structure would usually
be located on the west end.
For the two ferry ramps, the beginning of the bridges at Abutment 1 will be designated at the tops of the levee slopes. The designation of
the end of the bridges will be near the toe of the banks, in the water at high tide.
HISTORY
The structure was constructed in 1951 to accommodate the Eight Mile Road Ferry across Little Potato Slough which is also known as the
Little Connection Slough by the US Coast Guard.
DECK AND ROADWAY
The bridge identification was not visible.
SAFE LOAD CAPACITY
The load rating for this structure is being reviewed by SM&I Ratings Branch under Work Request 13201. An updated Load Rating
Summary will be archived when this review is complete. The current rating has been temporarily assigned to this structure in accordance
with SM&I procedures.
Vehicle loads to and from ferry are transferred to Span 1 located on the uphill end of the ramp. The ferry impacts the overhangs located
at the toe of Span 2.
The plans indicate Allowable Stress Design, 1949 AASHTO and 1949 Standard Specifications
Live Load: HS 15-44
Pile Loading: 22 tons
OPERATIONAL SIGNS
At this Bridge 29C0484:
Double arrow sign.
NOTICE VEHICLE OPERATORS ARE REQUIRED AND RESPONSIBLE TO OBTAIN CROSSING PERMITS FOR VEHICLES
- OVER 20 TONS GROSS OR 40,000 LBS
- OVER 40 FT WHEEL BASE
- WITH TRAILERS
CAUTION VEHICLES WITH PERMITS
MAX LOAD CAPACITY 30 TONS OR 60,000 LBS
MAXIMUM WHEEL BASE 49 FT
OPERATING HOURS 6:45 AM to 6:15 PM MON - SAT
At Bridge 29C0483 located on the other side of Little Potato Slough:
INSPECTION COMMENTARY
CONDITION INFORMATION
