The drive system consists of an open gear reduction system driven by an electric
motor. Dual motor brakes are used to stop the movement of the span. Center shear locks are driven by an electric motor at
midspan. Hold downs at the live load bearings are driven by electric motor mounted on a lower deck in the bascule pit.
Mech/Elect (06/01/2021) Drive Motors: The motors operate normally. The motor insulation resistance value measures less than 50%
below the minimum recommended by NETA.
Drive Motor Brakes: No defects or problems observed.
Hold Down Motors: The motors are drawing more than their nameplate current. The motor insulation resistance value measures less
than 50% below the minimum recommended by NETA.
(5/8/2023) Condition still present.
Center Lock Motor: The motor operates normally. The motor insulation resistance value measures less than 50% below the minimum
recommended by NETA.
The bridge mechanical control system consists of lever actuated fully seated limit switches and two sets of bronze cams connected to
the drive machinery. One set gives bridge span position indications the other is connected to the heel lock system and gives the
indication for the hold down bar positions.
Bridge control systems are located in the bridge house. The control system consists of a traffic control desk and a moveable span
control desk. A separate electrical cabinet houses the electrical components that supply power and provide control for the electric
motors.
Mech/Elect (06/01/2021) Some components of the control desks are old and may soon be phased out by the manufacturer. The
components still function properly.
Some labels on the control desk and the electrical cabinet are fading but are still legible.
One of the power (kW) measuring meters on the span control desk does not work.
(5/8/2023) Condition still present.
The bridge mechanical control system consists of lever actuated fully seated limit switches and two sets of bronze cams connected to
the drive machinery. One set gives bridge span position indications the other is connected to the heel lock system and gives the
indication for the hold down bar positions.
The interlocking system consists of limit switches that regulate the sequence of the traffic equipment and movable span operation.
Pier protection consists of timber fenders with diagonal skip sheathing of Span 11, protecting Piers 11 & 12. Clearance gauges are
mounted on the upstream and downstream ends of the fender at Pier 11.
The timber fenders appeared in fair condition. One diagonal sheathing plank is missing at the center of the fender along Pier 11.
