Board of Supervisors ,January 14; 2014
CONTINUATION Or SPONSORSHIP OF THE Page 2
ANNUAL SENIOR AWARENESS DAY
REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION:
For 35 years, the Board of Supervisors has supported the Annual Senior Awareness Day event
organized by the Human Services Agency (HSA). Thousands attend Senior Awareness Day each
year,. obtaining valuable information on local services, products, and facilities that benefit the aging
population and caregivers. Senior Awareness Day also celebrates the longevity of seniors and their
importance as contributors to the well being, vitality, and prosperity of San Joaquin County.
Senior Awareness Day could not be made possible without support from the community.
Volunteers of all ages enthusiastically provide assistance by participating on the planning
committee and/or by working the day of the event. Other County departments also support HSA in
carrying out the event, including Health Care Services, the Sheriffs Office, Parks and Recreation,
Environmental Health, Public Works, and Purchasing. Donations are also received from several
private businesses, some of which require a donation agreement signed by the HSA Director
of ening that funds or products will be used exclusively for Senior Awareness Day.
The 36`11 Annual Senior Awareness Day is planned for May 29, 2014 at Micke Grove Park. HSA
believes that as a result of the event being supported by the Board of Supervisors, Senior
Awareness Day advances the status of seniors. It has captured the attention and support of the
community at large, escalated the awareness of seniors, and produced significant outcomes over the
years. Additionally, the event has grown and offers more senior programs and services by private
and public sectors, additional requests for senior representation on boards and commissions, and
new se>uor employment opportunities.
At this time, staff is requesting that the Board proclaim May 29, 2014 to be the 36'x'Annual Senior
Awareness Day. To support the event, staff is requesting the Board continue to exempt the event
from Environmental llealth, Parks and Recreation, and other County department fees, and authorize
the HSA Director to approve all related expenses for the event.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Total Cost
While costs vary slightly from year to year, the budget for this year is $30,045.
