Description of Field Work
Sexton Road Bridge Across South San Joaquin Irrigation District Canal
Taber Job Number: 2013-0110
Purpose:
Geotechnical Services
Scope:
Subsurface exploration to adequately define earth materials and foundation conditions for the
proposed bridge structure will include a boring to 50-ft depth at one abutment, supplemented by an
impact-driven (dynamic)cone penetration test and/or selectively sampled test boring at the other
abutment(two 50-ft borings total). The boring locations are shown on the enclosed scaled drawing. The
borings will be drilled with a truck-mounted drill rig using auger and/or mud-rotary drilling methods and
will be 4 to 6-inches in diameter.Total length of lane closure will include the entire length of the existing
Sexton Road Bridge and an additional 10ft to the north and south, approximately 60 feet total in the
west(southbound) lane of Sexton Road.California MUTCD 2012 Edition Lane Closure on a Two-Lane
Road with Low Traffic Volumes(TA-11)standard plans will be used for the lane closure.See attached
plans.
Soil samples will be recovered at 5±ft intervals using Standard Penetration Test(SPT) and larger
diameter split-spoon samplers as necessary. The encountered earth materials will be field classified and
the borings will be logged (including groundwater conditions) by an engineer/geologist. Surface and
groundwater elevations will be noted, where encountered. The 50-ft deep borings will be backfilled
with neat cement grout. Borings will be patched with concrete dyed black to match existing road grade.
Drill cwttings will be disposed off-site. Work will be completed in one day.
A San Joaquin County Environmental Health permit has been issued for this project, permit
number SR0069774.
