Chlorinated Organics: <br />Chlorinated organic chemicals are toxic to varying degrees, and may cause skin <br />irritation or rashes to develop if spilled material comes into contact with the skin. <br />The majority of the chlorinated organics are non-flammable. Vapors from these <br />chemicals can cause eye irritation, lung irritation, and dizziness. Examples of <br />chlorinated organics are: <br />LI Methylene chloride <br />I=1 Perchloroethylene (tetrachloroethylene) <br />11] 1,1,1 trichloroethane <br />11] Trichloroethylene <br />The area of spilled chlorinated organics should be diked using inert adsorbents or <br />sand. Pools of spilled material then may be pumped into a DOT UN specification <br />container suitable for the lading. Liquids that cannot be recovered by pumping <br />should be made into a solid using inert adsorbent material and then shoveled into a <br />DOT UN specification container suitable for the lading. <br />Contaminated soils should be excavated and contained in DOT UN specification <br />container suitable for the lading. Contaminated equipment should be cleaned and <br />the cleaning residue contained in DOT UN specification container suitable for the <br />lading. <br />Persons coming into contact with the spilled material should remove all <br />contaminated clothing and wash thoroughly with soap and water. Obtain medical <br />attention as soon as possible in accordance with the medical surveillance program <br />of HAZWOPER. (Refer to the Operating Standards Manual).
