2 , 4-D occurred at 3 , 094 mg/kg which was 30. 9 times the TTLC,
DDE occurred at 2 . 5 mg/kg which was 2 . 5 times the TTLC,
dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) occurred at 3 . 7 mg/kg which
was 3 . 7 times the TTLC, and toxaphene occurred at 13 mg/kg which
was 2 . 6 times the TTLC.
2 . 4 Health Risks of Hazardous Substances Found.
2 .4 . 1 Toxaphene in certain concentrations is a human poison
by ingestion and possibly other routes. In animal studies
toxaphene is a carcinogen, tumorigen and teratogen. Human
systemic effects of exposure to excessive toxaphene by ingestion
and skin contact are somnolence, convulsions, coma and allergic
skin dermatitis. Excessive toxaphene is a skin irritant; it is
absorbed through the skin, and human liver injury has been
reported. Excessive amounts of toxaphene entering the body
through the mouth, lungs, and skin may be fatal .
2 . 4 . 2 Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in excessive
amounts is a human poison by ingestion and possibly other routes.
In animal studies DDT is a poison by ingestion, skin contact,
subcutaneous, intravenous, and intraperitoneal routes. DDT in
excessive amounts is a suspected human carcinogen, and in animal
studies is a carcinogen, neoplastigen, tumorigen and teratogen.
Human systemic effects of exposure to excessive DDT by ingestion
are anesthesia, convulsions, headache, analgesia, cardiac
arrythmias, nausea or vomiting, sweating and unspecified pulmonary
changes.
-4-
