L, SAFETY TAILGATE MEETING Q','

Week of 11/02 -11/08/2014 , ,_ t`+
Please also discuss any: PPE Feedback Final Call r'
[J Accidents [] Injuries (] Near Misses E
Favorable temps throughout with chance of rain later in the week. You must start preparing for inclimate
weather by separating usable material from non -usable, and removing all trash from all cages and side boxes.
By now everyone should know the PPF. requirements. All standard policies still apply and expect them to be
enforced.
As all branches utilize various resources to stock PPE, it's important that supplies meet your needs and
protection factors for the materials and equipment you use every day, and for the once in a while items as well.
Please provide feedback on the PPE we currently stock and the things you'd recommend, improve, or do away
with.
Here's a brief list of the recent topics we've covered and some feedback I received:
• Hard Hats — the brim extender is cheap and Flimsy, comes off too easy when you remove the hard hat.
• Eye and Face Protection — The glasses we stock scratch too easily.
• Gloves — the leather glove we stock still allows too much heat to pass through when working with steel
dies. We should try out a different type. (We're going to try some gauntlet cuffed leather gloves that
you'd put on over your existing gloves for very short duration use.)
• Class 3 Apparel -- long sleeved shirts don't have the pockets we need for our supplies (particularly
layout crews).
• Night Pants — current night pants have a half elastic waist and don't tighten or loosen very easily. Also
the cuff is Velcro and makes it difficult to take the pants off. (our next order of pants will have a full
elastic waist.)
• Hearing Protection — no feedback received.
• Respiratory Protection - no feedback received.
As we're constantly upgrading the fleet and trying new products and methods, the PPE requirements are likely
to change as well. Make PPE an everyday habit to best protect you now and in the future.
Traffic Control Company Tragedy
Bay Area Traffic Solutions (BATS), a company based in Fremont with operations throughout Northern CA, lost
one of their workers last Thursday. While performing one way traffic control near Laguna Seca Raceway a
driver under the influence of alcohol/drugs passed the pilot car at 90mph, and struck one of the BATS workers.
The worker died at the scene.
In this industry, you cannot be complacent. Whether we're doing the traffic control ourselves or someone else,
whether it is a full road closure or just one lane, you have to be fully alert at all times Have an escape plan
and emergency system, work safe, smart and do everything possible to avoid all accidents.
