Look out for each other especially new workers. Frequent water, rest, and shade.
Are you prepared for an emergency?
Whether it's an equipment failure, hazardous material release, a fire, an accident, or an injury - do you know what to do?
Do you have the proper supplies? Are you inspecting your safety equipment regularly?
Last week two workers were burned by thermoplastic when an air pocket entered the full kettles after the gun blow down
took place. They were about 15' away to the right of the truck. One worker was burned on his wrist despite having long
sleeves and gloves on. The other worker was not wearing long sleeves and was burned on his forearm 15' to the side of
the truck is still too close for workers without appropriate PPE.
When on any thermo crew performing any task, you must wear work boots, a class III garment, long sleeves, Z87+ rated
safety glasses, and a hard hat. During certain tasks additional PPE is required - such as hearing protection and a face
shield
Prepare for and prevent burns (Marker crews, thermo crews, quickie torch users, etc)
-Always carry ice water
Have an appropriate first aid kit
-Allow authorized and properly protected personnel only
-Follow proper order of operations
Material Release - Stuck / Broken Kettle Valve
Two workers had to let their kettle drain out when the valve was stuck and wouldn't close. This was in the middle of a
busy residential area
Prepare for and prevent spills.
Have emergency spill kit available. Metal bucket, cardboard, and extra beads can help contain the spill. Make a bead
berm on the lift gate to prevent release. Use the bucket or cardboard to catch the run off. Have an emergency device
installed on your kettle such as a kick / hit plate or a pipe insert.
Inspect your Fuel Fittings and Lines
Two Fremont crews had propane fires last week. In both cases the workers were able to immediately turn off the fuel
valve. 1) the tank wasn't properly connected and fuel was leaking - when the worker had the torch nearby it ignited the
fuel 2) The fuel line to the torch had some slack under the handliner, it wore a hole and ignited.
Prepare for an prevent fires.
Inspect your fuel fittings, lines, and valves Make sure your fire extinguishers are readily available and ready for use.
Install additional rub protection wherever necessary
Hit by a car? Call 911 immediately.
Our worker went out on foot and stopped a motorist who was tracking the thermo bike lane. The driver acknowledged and
stopped, but a few seconds later he let off the brake and bumped our worker with his vehicle The police were not called
until 4 hours later.
To all staff no matter the circumstances, if an employee is struck by a vehicle you must stop work immediately and dial
911 You must document everything possible and take the time to interview witnesses, as well as provide information to
the authorities.
Prepare for and prevent collisions.
Keep a safe distance. Maintain eye contact if possible. Have an escape plan. Stay out of harm's way.
Have a safe week and make sure you're prepared for all emergency situations
