Melissa Nissim [EH]
From: Scott Lewis <slewis@lsce.com>
Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2018 4:27 PM
To: Melissa Nissim [EH]
Subject: Request for Seal Material Variance Permit WP0037962
Attachments: MW Final Design Sketch 2.27.18.pdf
Ms. Nissim,
LSCE is requesting a variance to the County's requirement of neat cement as an sanitary seal material in the monitoring
well to be constructed at the corner of McKinley Road and Vierra Road in Lathrop, CA (SJCEHD Permit WP00037962).
LSCE proposes to use 10.3 sack sand/cement grout instead of the neat cement. The reason for the request is due to neat
cements tendency to intrude into gravel pack past intermediate sealing materials. This is exacerbated by the depth of
the seal. Placing the sanitary seal opposite a dense clay and screen opposite the targeted aquifer formation resulted in a
short gravel interval above the upper screen, which causes us concern with regard to the use of neat cement. We have
successfully installed hundreds of monitoring wells with 10.3 sack grout and are confident that is an appropriate sealing
material for this application.
The contractor is currently reaming the test hole in preparation of monitoring well construction. Seal placement is
expected to take place either Thursday or Friday of this week. The Contractor will call and schedule the seal date and
time.
If you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank You
Scott Lewis
Scott Lewis, P.G.
Principal Geologist
500 First Street
Woodland, CA 95695
530.661.0109 Main
916.240.0230 Cell
slewis(alsce.com
http://Isce.com/
©LUHOORFF & SCALMANINI
CONSULTING ENGINEERS
This electronic message contains inforniation from Luhdorff & Scalmanini, Consulting Engineers, which is confidential or privileged.
