Magnets will
be utilized to delineate between non -mercury and mercury flame sensors —
mercury sensors being magnetic. Employees receive specific classroom and
on -the job training in the identification and removal of mercury switches.
Removal Procedure: Employees will identify the potential location of mercury
switches based on the particular appliances as per training provided. Once the
location of a switch is identified, employees will use both a visual
examination of the switch and a magnet to determine if it is a mercury switch.
If necessary, tools, (both power and manual) may be utilized to access the
switch. Once determined to be a mercury switch, wire cutters will be utilized
to remove the switch.
Packaging: 3 gallon buckets with screw top lids. Mercury switches are generally
metal encased switches which are difficult to break and are tightly packed
together. If a switch appears to be compromised, it is packaged in a secondary
container prior to placing it in the bucket.
Labeling: Labels will be affixed to the 3 gallon bucket at the time the first
mercury switch is placed in the bucket. The label will have the generator
name and address, the accumulation start date and will state "Universal Waste
Mercury Switches"
Storage: Mercury buckets will be stored in the designated hazardous waste
location which includes a secondary containment pallet. Storage will be for
up to one year, but mercury switches are typically shipped every 3-4 months.
