Underground Tank Removal
E -Z Serve Station
239 S. Stockton Ave., Ripon
Introduction
The purpose of this project was to remove three underground storage
tanks (USTs). The USTs had capacities of 8,000, 8,000 and 6,000 gallons, and had
all been used for storage of gasoline. Site investigation and sampling was
completed by Dave Charter of AAT Environmental, under the observation of
Michael Kith of the San Joaquin County Department of Health.
Field Observations
All three gasoline tanks were uncovered with an excavator and the fill,
Product, and vent lines removed from the tanks. The USTs were then "triple
rinsed" using a high pressure washer, and the rinsate was removed from the
USTs with a vacuum truck. The rinsate was manifested as non-RCRA hazardous
liquid waste, and transported to Gibson Environmental, in Bakersfield, a
California licensed facility. Dry ice were then added to the tanks at the rate of
15 pounds per thousand gallons, to purge all oxygen from the USTs for removal
and transport. The tanks were then removed from the ground with the
excavator, and required soil samples collected.
All three USTs were in fair to good condition, with no significant pilling
or holes observed. They were all constructed of single wall, unprotected steel
and had been backfilled with native sandy soil. Some soil above and around the
tanks was discolored and exhibited a petroleum odor.
Page 1
