s{
f
a
5.2.3 Discussion Strengths and Weaknesses of Method
Traditional excavation has the advantage of! being a rapid complete removal of
contamination. This would allow rapid closure ofIthe site. Unfortunately the proximity of
a building would require shoring to protect the integrity of the sides of the excavation. The
cost of shoring is significant. Cost estimates for tr!arlitional excavation range in and around
f $50,000. I
h
. If
i
5.3 Bioremediation
}
5.3.1 Background Jil
'i
A biological enhancing, soil oxygenating material, produced by marine microorganisms is
available. This material is manufactured by Alpha E vironmental, Inc and vended in
California by Diamond Environmental Services,Ltd. The.materii l is known as"Alpha Bio-
Catalyst". To treat hydrocarbons, the bio-catalyst is"with hydrocarbon feeding bacteria
and basic nutrients,(nitrogen and phosphorous). The mixture, call it the treatment solution,
is applied as an aqueous solution. Generally measurable reduction of the hydrocarbon can
be measured within thirty days of application. Copies of the Material Safety Data Sheet and
other technical information is included in the Appendix-
a
Should the project warrant a greater supply of oxygen we would entertain the possibility of
bioventing. Air would be supplied to the treatmentrone in a limited quantity to preclude the
possibility of causing air sparging.
5.3.2 Discussion of Application
i
j The general morphology of the specific site serves to provide interesting potential for
treatment with in-situ bioremediation. When the original excavation of the 1000 gallon tank
was performed a significant portion of the back-fill was pea gravel. The pea gravel mass has
open space because of its uniform size and shape. The open space could be used as a
charging area for the treatment media. If the contamination has not migrated a great
distance, infiltration from the charged pea gravel mass could reach and inoculate the zone of
contamination. i
E
i
l
Page 6
