j
TREADWELL & ROLLO
hammer falling 30 inches onto dulling rods extending above the ground surface. After
' the sample was driven, it was withdrawn from the borehole and examined. Field notes
and graphic representations of the lithology encountered during drilling are presented in
Figures 3a and 3b. The methodology used in classifying the soil is shown on Figure 4.
All soil samples were screened for the presence of organic vapors using a portable
organic vapor meter (OVM) The OVM uses a photo-ionization detector with a 10.2
electron volt lamp to detect the presence of volatile compounds To facilitate a
headspace measurement, a resealable bag was partially filled with soil and sealed. After
approximately five minutes, the OVM probe was inserted into the .heads ace of the bag.
g
The OVM measurements for each sample were used to determine which samples were
selected for additional analytical testing The OVM readings are presented at the
' applicable depth interval on the well log (Figure 3).
Since no organic vapors were detected in the field screening performed with the OVM, a
single sample collected at the capillary fringe was submitted for chemical testing. After
1 the sample was driven, a six-inch lined sample core was covered with Teflon and plastic
end caps. The sample was placed into an ice-cooled chest and transported to the
1 analytical laboratory under chain-of-custody procedures. Additional soil samples were
collected for soil classification purposes.
4.2 Monitoring Well Installation
The monitoring well was constructed by installing a clean, two-inch-diameter, flush joint,
threaded, schedule 40 PVC casing with a clean 10-foot-long, factory slotted screened
section with 0.02-inch perforations. A 10-foot length of screened casing and a 10-foot
length of blank casing was installed in the well.
4
11070707 PJC 18 November 1993
I
