8 Sample Identification, Documentation
and Shipment
Proper identification, documentation, and handling of samples is crucial to subsequent
evaluations of the environmental data. The following describes the requirements for sample
identification, documentation, and shipment.
8.1 Sample Nomenclature
Each sample requires a unique identifier that ideally indicates the type of sample, the location on
the site where the sample was collected, and the depth of the sample.
8.1.1 Routine Soil Samples
Each soil sample will be assigned a unique Sample Identification Number using the following
designations:
All samples will begin with an abbreviated site reference—EC I—followed by a hyphen and the
letter S for soil samples then a hyphen, and a two digit boring ID. The two digit boring ID will be
prefixed by"1"for duplicate samples. The boring ID will be followed by a hyphen and the
sampling depth in feet bgs. For example if a soil sample is collected from boring 02 at a depth of
2 feet bgs, it will be designated EC1-S-02-2.
8.1.2 Split-duplicates
Split-duplicate and blank samples will be assigned names based on the sampling location.
Duplicate samples will be assigned with a"1"prefix on the boring number portion of the sample
ID. For example, if sample EC1-S-02-2 is designated for duplicate sampling, the duplicate
sample would be identified as EC 1-S-102-2. The primary sample and duplicate sample IDs will
be recorded in the field documentation.
8.2.1 Routine Groundwater Samples
Each groundwater sample will be assigned a unique Sample Identification Number using the
following designations:
All samples will begin with an abbreviated site reference—EC 1—followed by a hyphen and the
letter W for water samples then a hyphen, and a two digit boring ID. The two digit boring ID will
be prefixed by"1" for duplicate samples. For example a water sample collected from boring 02
will be designated EC1-W-02.
8.2.2 Split-duplicates and Blanks
Duplicate and blank samples will be assigned names based on the sampling location. Duplicate
samples will be assigned with a"1"prefix on the boring number portion of the sample ID. For
example, if sample EC1-W-02 is designated for duplicate sampling, the duplicate sample would
be identified as EC1-W-102. The primary sample and duplicate sample IDs will be recorded in
the field documentation.
14:002693.1401.01 BR 8-1
EI ComaVo No,I
